Thousands of years ago while pondering the mysteries of consciousness, the universe and the human condition, the Greek philosopher Epictetus remarked that humans are nothing more than “a soul carrying a corpse”, and while it is a rather brusque statement that almost certainly provided at least one reason for people not to invite him to dinner parties, it very colourfully describes the role of the brain in the human body.
